Reactive attachment disorder is a rare but serious mental health condition wherein infants and young children cannot create healthy bonds to parents or caregivers. Children with reactive attachment disorder are discovered to be neglected or abused in infancy or were subjected to conditions wherein their emotional needs were not met. As a result, these infants and children did not learn how to establish attachments with other people. Diagnosis and treatment of this mental health condition are difficult, and parents and caregivers are often confused as to how they can cope with the disorder and a seemingly unaffectionate child. Still, parents must learn how to find ways to maintain their relationship with their children and to ensure that no harm will fall upon them.
